 Words from Executive Director…
STUART GORDON, JR.
The year 2010-2011 saw a year where the economy hit home. As our clients and State suffered financial stress, so did our Agency. Funding cuts by United Way, the discontinuance of the Consortium and threatened cuts at the State level, left FCS and CCCS fighting to find the funding to continue to provide high level services with fewer dollars. Thanks to the legislature, SAPTA, VOCA and DCFS we managed to continue all programming at the levels we have offered over the years. Our Camp was awarded “Outstanding Program for Victim Services” and our programs continued to expand to meet the needs of the community. CCCS saw increased demand for pre and post Bankruptcy Counseling and a demand to expand the Social Security Representative Payee program. Co-occurring treatment for those with substance abuse and mental health issues, continued to be a program for which FCS received recognition. Thanks to Title IVB funding, we were successful in treating increased client levels for clients in their reunification process. Our Clients continued to struggle as many lost homes and health insurance, yet with the assistance of these grant funded programs, FCS/CCCS was able to help the bulk of the referrals.
As we enter our 53nd year of service we anticipate another difficult year ahead for our clients as the Country and Nevada move out of this long-term recession. Positioned to assist, Family and Consumer Credit will be here during the difficult times and when we as a State emerge in a new and healthy fiscal economy. –Stuart Gordon, Jr., Executive Director

THOUGHTS FROM….

Board President, Fred Hinners:
The phrase “Give me a thread and I’ll make you a shirt,” is and adage that seems to apply to Family Counseling Service. As with most non-profits in difficult financial times, we look for ways to persevere and continue to provide services to our clientele. Our more than 50 years in serving the Reno area is an achievement in itself, one that validates the dedication of our staff and our value to the various agencies that provide the bulk of our funding.
We provide substance abuse counseling, credit and bankruptcy counseling, counseling for depression and sexual and emotional abuse. Work is done by a small paid staff and contract therapists.
Our value is also demonstrated by our continued good standing with a national accrediting organization. We are one of the few social service agencies in the area going through a rigorous evaluation every four years by the Council on Accreditation. Every program of the agency is certified.
Family Counseling was able to offer increased assistance this past year. We added hours a psychiatrist was available; and added a paralegal to assist with bankruptcy paperwork if financially challenged clients cannot be helped by a debt management plan.
We held our annual retreat for children: a weeklong camp held at Eagle Lake to help children heal from the wounds and betrayal of sexual abuse. We also held a weekend retreat for foster children who are about to leave the control of the state system and give them practical help on how to handle their finances.
One of our highest-profile programs is Aly’s Prom Closet, which helps disadvantaged youth by providing prom dresses and tuxes.
Our board, management and staff will continue to work hard to provide as many needed services as possible to the public at large. Our goal continues to be “helping hearts and home.” We look forward to serving another 50 years.
