Addictions and Co-Occurring Disorders

If you or someone you love is struggling with a substance misuse, abuse, or dependence problem, or you fear that they might be, help is available. Family Counseling Service has special programs for substance use concerns and for those struggling with substance use and mental health issues (such as alcohol abuse and depression, or anxiety and marijuana dependence).

Could I have substance abuse or dependence?

While a professional assessment is necessary to accurately diagnose a substance abuse or dependence problem, a simple self-administered quiz, the CAGE, may help you answer this question:

C – Have you ever felt the need to Cut down on your drinking/drug use?
A – Do you get Annoyed at criticism by others about your drinking/drug
use?
G – Have you ever felt Guilty about your drinking/drug use or something
you have done while drinking or using other drugs
E – Eye-opener: Have you ever felt the need for a drink or a drug early
in the morning?

If you answered “yes” to one of these questions, you may want to seek
professional help.

What are co-occurring disorders?

The term co-occurring disorders refers to an individual having one or more substance abuse disorders and one or more mental health disorders at the same time (for example, depression and alcohol dependence). Treating both disorders at the same time, as we do at Family Counseling Service, enhances the recovery and healing process.

Family Counseling Service offers two levels of outpatient care.

Outpatient Treatment, Level I
Individuals attend one to two hours of group counseling per week and
receive individual counseling at least once a month, or for those with
co-occurring disorders twice a month, with more frequent individual
sessions usually available if desired. Couples and family counseling are often part of a treatment plan as well.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment, Level II.1 Individuals attend group three
days per week for three hours of service each day in either the morning or afternoon.
